International Day of the World's Indigenous People

Indigenous peoples make up less than 5% of the world’s population but account for 15% of the poorest. They practice unique cultures and have retained social, cultural, economic, and political characteristics distinct from the dominant societies they are surrounded by. Indigenous peoples have chased after recognition of their identities, way of life and right to traditional lands, but have had their rights violated continuously throughout history. These communities are recognized as requiring special measures to protect their rights and maintain their distinct cultures.
