World Tuna Day

This UN instituted World Tuna Day in 2016 to raise awareness to the importance of sustainable management of tuna stocks in our oceans (1). Tuna are a very important source of nutrition and livelihood for millions of people around the world, and is vital to the oceans ecosystem. There are about 40 different species of tuna, and the industry was valued at $10 million USD (2). Because of the large demand and value of tuna, there is a huge risk of over fishing and depletion. There are lots of regulations and cooperation happening to protect this critical animal and we must do our part to purchase sustainably caught tuna.
